Programmable thermostats are one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce your annual energy costs. Use your HVAC to fullest potential and use this brief guide to get started on choosing and installing a programmable thermostat for your Houston home:
Choosing a Model
There are three primary types of programmable thermostats: 7-day, 5+2 day, and 5-1-1 models. As the names suggest, each type allows you to set different schedules throughout the week. Almost every model comes with four pre-programmed settings, and many offer additional features such as a backlit display, air filter reminder, malfunction indicator, and more. On average, proper use of a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 a year.
Setting Your Schedule
Your scheduling limitations will depend primarily on the type of model you get, but otherwise you have total freedom to set your own schedule. Try to keep the thermostat above 78 degrees in the summer to maximize energy savings. You can save up to three percent for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees. Don’t turn the air conditioner completely off when you leave, as doing so will only cause the unit to work harder and longer when it cycles on.
Overriding the Schedule
Most units allow users to override the schedule and “hold” the temperature at another setting. There are generally two of hold settings: permanent/vacation and temporary. Temporary holds go away once the next cycle begins, while permanent holds maintain the temperature indefinitely until overridden. While the latter can provide better energy savings over a long period of absence, it is best to avoid overusing holds; you’ll encounter the best energy savings by adhering to the preset energy-savings points for long periods of time (about eight hours).
